Things to Eat!

I ate these beans already. They were pretty yummy. It was nice.

The lettuce is huge! It is growing at least one new leaf per day, maybe more than that. It comes out of the pot and touches the table below it. I am going to make a salad with it for lunch tomorrow. I can just cut off how much i want and it will keep growing! Hooray for food from my garden!

The peppers seem to be doing very well. I think it is about time to pick the best one and get rid of the rest.

Look how big they are!

This is the lettuce. It seems to be doing quite well, growing new little leaves all the time.












This is a new addition. I have been wanting to grow mint for some time now, but have never been able to find mint seeds. Maybe mint doesn't grow from a seed, i dunno. It has square stems, I know that. So, anyway, I was walking down the street and I passed a plant store and I thought to myself, 'hey, that looks like mint'. So i walked over and felt the stem to see if it was round or square and it was square, so I knew it was a mint. It is a peppermint, and it came in a paper carton that made it impossible to water and Target didn't have any small pots for me to put it in, but I did have an empty coffee can, so I pounded some holes in it and planted it in there. Voila. (I think I like it best of all, and it smells good!)






My nasturtium is doing lovely. It really loves the light.













Herbs seem to be doing ok. Something has finally sprouted in the Thyme section. Also, I planted some more chives in there, but haven't seen any coming up.










Check out the cucumbers! The little baby leaves are dying and falling off and they are growing new real cucumber leaves. I was worried for a little bit that there was something wrong, but it seems this is just the way cucumbers work.









Here's my two little tomato plants. Still very small. But finally getting a little bit bigger...












Carrots! Old ones in back, young ones in front. I have no idea how to tell when I should pull them up.











Peppers are looking lovely.














Beans are still monsters. They are losing some leaves, as well.


The basil and the aloe and the lemon trees are all still doing fine. They just haven't changed much since the last time you saw them, so I didn't bother with a photo.

Fungus Gnat Infestation

AHHHHH! There are TONS of little fungus gnats flying around my plants. I've been killing them in the mornings when they are all looking out the window by spraying them with windex. There is a fungus gnat graveyard on the window ledge. Today I took more steps in the war against them. I've put a piece of raw potato on each plant for the larvae to move into tonight while i sleep. i also put tape along that ledge so the adult gnats will get trapped and die. I have been drying out my plants to keep the larvae from developing so I can kill them with hydrogen peroxide, but a few were looking awfully thirsty, so i watered those with hydrogen peroxide today (one part 3% H2O2 to 4 parts water, in case you need to do this, too). They fizzed. It was neat. I REALLY hope this gets rid of them and I can love them again some more. I did take some more pictures, maybe I will post them tomorrow. The veggies seem to be doing quite well.

I went away for four days and now all my plants are monsters...

The peppers grew a lot. Now we can actually see them!

Last time I saw these cucumbers, they were barely even out of the ground. Now they have big healthy looking leaves. The sad thing is that I will have to murder TWO of them!










Tomato is still teeny tiny. A little bigger, I think you can actually see him in this photo. There is also another one in there, and one of them will have to be murdered as well.
















Look! Carrots! The string is dividing the pot so I didn't forget where I planted them in case they hadn't sprouted by today. I am experimenting with succession planting, which means I planted half 10 days ago, and I will plant the other half today. That way when I harvest them I don't have to eat them all at once.








Remember the bean sprouts? They are huge!

Cucumber Sprouts

I saw them yesterday morning before I left for Steve's, but didn't have time to take their picture. You can expect photos when I get home next week.

New Sprouts!

If you look really carefully down in the bottom right corner you can see the little tomato sprout that is growing. My camera (or maybe me) is not very good at taking pictures that close up.















My lettuce is also growing and it is so exciting!

















Here are the beans that were growing the last time I posted. Look how big they are! They sure are growing fast.










Hooray! My peppers finally sprouted. That's a little pepper sprout you see in the picture. Now I am just waiting on carrots and cucumbers.

Oh boy! Bean sprouts!!!!!

I am so excited about these little buggers... This morning all but the Roc'Dor (who came up yesterday) were still under the dirt. Now I have plants!!!!

Pictures of Everything!

Here is my little garden.

These plants have been around for a while. The center one is some sort of aloe I got at the grocery store and does very well. The other two are lemons and I planted them from lemon seeds from a lemon I ate. They are also doing very well, given I have sometimes forgotten to water them for weeks at a time.

These are the herbs I am growing; thyme, cilantro, and chives. The thyme is not doing so well...



















This is my basil. It seems to be doing well so far. Let's hope I can keep this one alive longer than the last one.


















Last but not least...
This little guy sprouted on Saturday! I could see the others poking up under the soil, too, but wasn't able to get a good picture of them.



The other pots are planted also, but I am assuming you dont want to look at photos of dirt. I'll post their pics when they sprout!

Beginnings

I want a garden. I want fresh veggies. I have a huge windowsill. I am taking up windowsill farming. It's an experiment, so we'll see what happens. I ordered a bunch of seeds from conatinerseeds.com, picked some up from my local hardware store, and got some pots and soil. I spent Sunday morning potting plants and making my windowsill lovely. I now have 4 types of beans, pepper, tomato, basil, thyme, cilantro, chives, nasturtium, 3 lemon plants (that I planted about 6 months ago using seeds I got out of a lemon), and an aloe plant.
This is my second go at herbs in this windowsill, they all started dying last summer when I was out of town for two weeks and I never brought them back to life. I planted them about 2 weeks ago, and they have all sprouted.
I picked up some additional soil this afternoon on my way home from work so I can plant carrots and cucumbers. I also picked up some lettuce seeds, and I figure I'll plant those in one of the lemon's pots (who needs THREE lemon trees?). Once I've got those in the ground all that is left is waiting and watering...
